"A" Class racing on Powell's Pool
7th May 2016
Seven skippers entered the first A Class race to be hosted by BMYC for many years. The weather was kind to us with bright sunshine all day with a not quite as strong as predicted generally blowing from the South East with up to 90 degree variations at times which kept everyone on their toes.
Pro was Robin Webb ably assisted by Ian McDonald & Clive Hartland. A testing course was set both for the boats and eyesight as the marks used spanned the width of the lake in front of the clubhouse, basically a triangle which was varied a couple of times to cope with the fluctuations in the wind direction.
Peter Wiles was the class of the field with a complete set of fourteen 1st places an excellent demonstration of RA sailing.
For the rest of the competitors their results were a lot more mixed,
David Stewart came second with no scores lower than 5th but probably more 3’s and 4’s than he would have liked.
The battle in the midfield was very close with one point separating 3rd – 5th
Graham Tite in his 1st ever A class event had a slow start but picked up a good string of 2’s in the middle of the event and was the only skipper to lead PW for a lap(the highlight of his day I suspect) finished 3rd on countback.
John Smith finished the event in 4th place on countback only scoring one 2nd with a mix of 3’s – 5’s for the rest, I am sure that the varying inland wind being a little more difficult to work out than his home water of Gosport.
Phil Watkins was one point behind on 44 made up of three 2’s but more 4’s and 6’s than he wold have liked.
Terry Connell started well with a 2 but problems caused two DNF’s and with the heat of the contest between Graham, John & Phil struggled to get any finishes higher than 5th.
Dave Peters sailing an ex vane Lollypop which last saw completion in 1988 brought up the rear but not before it had shown that at times it didn’t lack boat speed maybe a little more development will make it more competitive.
The prize giving took place and Peter Wiles thanked the members and race team of BMYC for hosting the event.
All in all a great days sailing was enjoyed by everyone.
Here’s looking forward to the 2017 event. (GT)

A message and comments from our Rear Commodore, Peter Henderson
Our AGM turned out to be a perfect day we shall all remember. We dearly missed those who were not able to be present.
The morning races enjoyed perfect sailing weather and was expertly run and well supported. Deserved prizewinners were well rewarded once again.
Afternoon.. Clive Hartland took the chair and members persuaded Graham Tite to take all last years honours for another year. We may have to write him a cover note to take home for Sue!
Mike Stevenson gracefully accepted the member's thanks for his expertise running the Club's new website, accepting the new post created for him on the committee.
NOW ---Observed from my PT in the corner of a comfortable clubhouse, and with such good companions. (They did pull me out of the lake when I mixed up my astern & ahead controls!)
After 4 years members have formed into some well defined groups.
Ex WW2 experienced gentlemen who know everything and have the knowledge ready to pass on freely, hoping their mistakes are long forgotten!
Younger members who THINK they know everything and insist on making the same mistakes all over again.
We will overlook the expert tea time warm seated window sailors who came without their boats and enthusiastically announce all the viewed racing misdemeanours as they know all the rules.
And our most important group - The Marine Search & Rescue with underwater recovery faculty. This section have had their busiest and most successful year to date.
Can anyone think what to do with all this wreckage?
God bless you all.

A nice quiet non-racing Thursday. A bit cold though, so everyone sailed from inside the club house. Brian Morris looks very pleased (rightly so) with the decals on his new Dragon Force thanks to Mark Unitt (camera right). Pity about the soccer club logo though. Birmingham City - who's ever heard of them?. Also taking a bow are the dynamic kitchen duo (with cake!) of Ian Apps and John Meredith. What would we do without them? Not in shot, Peter Henderson, who took the pictures.

Hi All,
As you know we hosted the 1st round of the MYA Midland District IOM race on Saturday the 9th November and a very successful day it was.
Twenty two skippers battled for overall honours (Results can be found here). Pictures of the winners here
Quite a good wind varying between WSW &SW settled in which was a relief to all considering how it looked when we arrived at the lake. There were some holes in the wind in places with yours truly finding them on too many occasions for my liking, hey ho!!.
Overall I think that our club put on a very good show which should lift our reputation in the model sailing world.
I would like to thank (in no particular order) Clive , Brian, Roger, Ron, Rob, Mark for their efforts in making the day go so well. It was much appreciated.
In all a very good day for BMYC lets look forward to many more.
Best regards,
Graham Tite
Commodore BMYC.

Model yacht sailors drink tea!
What might have been a record turnout (27+) on the 1st October, taking advantage of good sailing conditions, were provided with tea and biscuits thanks (again) to Galley Slaves John Meredith and Ian Apps.

A warm welcome back after enforced medical absence to our Treasurer Bill Pitt accompanied by wife Gillian. Bill is a long-standing member and was involved in initial approaches to Sutton Sailing Club and with Gillian has looked after BMYC finance for a very long time. We wish them well and trust that he will enjoy a lot more racing in the future. |
Hi All,
Last Saturday, 27th July, BMYC hosted its annual Footy Open event. 11 competitors took part and the event passed off well.
Thanks must go to Mark Unitt, Graham Saunders and Mike Stevenson without whose help the event would not have been possible, Thanks Guys.
The Club fared well from the event with £40.50 being taken in entry fees and takings from Tea/Coffee and Cake sales(cakes baked by Mrs Tite). After taking away the cost of trophies(£25.50) /ingredients(£5.00) this leaves the club with a profit on the day of £10 to go to the Club coffers.
Thanks to all club members who took part in a good day.
Regards,
Graham Tite.

Recently, two member's boats have "done a Mary Rose" but have since been successfully recovered.
Dave Spears' Dragon Force was found due to the efforts of Dave and Graham Tite using a trawl board.
Dave Peters' 36R was recovered thanks again to the assistance of scuba diver Mike Ahern.
Pictures of these rescues are on the Pictures 2013 page.

Breaking news from your Commodore
Sutton Sailing Club held their AGM on 11/2/2013 and at that meeting it was decided that there would be a new membership category within the club :- “Model Boat Member”.
The negative thing about this is an increase in our fee from £20 to £30. The Positives are a more stable relationship with our hosts SSC.
I have been asked to take on the roll of Fleet Captain and will be the liaison between the committee of SSC and BMYC members so if there are any issues that need to be addressed to SSC can they please be done through me.
We should be able to firm up the position regarding Saturday sailing via negotiation with SSC racing secretary Jonathan Haigh and once I have done that we should be able to publish the confirmed dates.
We will be able to take up training with SSC at discounted rates and suitably trained people will be able to operate the SSC powerboat.
The SSC committee are happy for us to identify ourselves as Birmingham Model Yacht Club which is positive and allows us to move forward and build on the 90+ year history at our new venue.
I am looking forward to the coming season when we are to host a Footy open event 27th July , Micro Magic open and IOM winter series event, dates to be arranged and confirmed.
Again subject to Saturdays being available it would be good to have a couple of one day races (for a Club Championship) for club members along the same lines as an open event, again I will liaise with SSC to see if we can make this happen. Graham Tite
