IOM Racing 2016

A very still day which got even stiller so racing abandoned after tea.

Two guests this month but a slightly reduced Club fleet. Weather not as forecast - we had a stiff southwesterly to start which eased slightly to north westerly requiring course adjustments. Before tea there was a mixture of No.1 and No.2 rigs, but after tea everyone on No.1. (Some pictures here)

The weather was very unkind to us today almost making it impossible to race with a heavy thunder storm which started at approx. 1.30. We had an early tea break and by 3.00 the thunder and lightning had stopped but unfortunately not the rain (I was glad I had me brolly). Ten hardy skippers took part with the wind doing its best to confuse everyone with its variations but it held on long enough for five heats to be held. John Burgoine was on great form, if he didn’t lead straight from the start line he managed to work his way to the front and scored five 1st places. Allan Coleman sailing very well this year in all classes was 2nd, Alan Skitt's result was marred in heat 3 when he became entangled with the anchor line of the leeward buoy causing a DNF which could not be discarded as we only had 5 heats. Further down the fleet the places were well contested but consistency was hard to find for most due to the conditions (but that’s why we do it). Last but not least was Anne Burgione sailing I think in her first IOM race, she was hampered I think by her mechanic who appeared to have supplied not one but two duff batteries.

The first of the IOM "Summer" series although it didn't feel much like it with a distinctly cool south westerly.
A race of two halves really. Before tea a good steady wind although slightly shadowed by trees and clubhouse and after tea the wind dying away until it became a bit of a drifter in the last heat. However enjoyable racing was had by a fleet of sixteen boats although some fared distinctly better than others. At the moment, John B (35) looks uncatchable even after he's had a dodgy start, but there are several skippers behind him who could have gone in any order. The usual hard luck stories prevailed.
Graham Tite kept strict(ish) good order and Sid scored. Tea and biscuits provided to nearly forty racers and audience "experts" by Ian - many thanks. (MS) A couple of videos HERE
